American Cemetery, Cambridge, England, lost Eglinton, North Ireland., We
got on a train and headed to Belfast, where Lockheed had sent mechanics
out to assemble our P-38s. We were told to check them to see if everything
worked, and then test fly them. If they were not perfect, we were told not
to accept them. Well, nothing worked on my P-38, so they rolled the planes
back into the hanger. Jimmy Doolittle showed up and was so mad he fired
half the Lockheed employees. They finally got them fixed, rolled them out
of the hanger, and the first pilot took off, kept it on the deck, and then
pulled straight up into the overcast. He came back through the overcast
after doing a loop, and ploughed right into the runway |

North Africa, with three groups of twelve P-38s. I was in the last group
and ‘tail-end Charlie’, so I had to fly fast to keep up, and my gas
gauge was going down quickly. We were headed towards Lands End at the tip
of England, when I saw a small RAF field and told the flight lead I had to
land. Another P-38 pilot was low on gas as well, and he landed on the
short field before me, kicking up lots of water. When I landed, I had no
way to stop, and skidded into an elevated railroad track on the far end of
the field. The plane went over the track and down onto the beach. A
British guard came up and said, ‘Hey Yank, get out before the plane
burns’. I climbed up on the tracks only to see another Brit with a mine
detector. I had crashed a brand new P-38 onto a beach near a minefield!”
damaged during crash landing in Wales, 97FS, when repaired was transferred
to 95FS and is the plane H. Smith went down in 14 Oct 43 |

Crashed
, 97 FS, 82FG, Spain, HONORED BY
Cordelia G. Miller, BRIEF STAY IN ENGLAND, PLANE CRASHED IN SPAIN, SENT TO
ITALY, AIR TRANSPORT COMMAND 1943. HIS P-38 RAN OUT OF GAS AND CAUSED THE
CRASH. HE FLEW 'BRASS' ALL OVER THE MEDITERRANEAN FOR THE AIR TRAINING
COMMAND AIR CORPS. Lieutenant Miller looked me up to relate the story of
his crash-landing during the fly-over from England. I'd pre-flight his
P-38 in Ireland. He had crash-landed in Spain, close to Gibraltar. He
said: 'My right engine cut out and I was blown out to sea - then my left
engine cut out ! I decided to try for a landing on the coast and as I hit
my left engine tore out, then, the tail boom on one side broke off, then,
the tail boom on the other side and I finally ended up sliding into Spain
without much remaining of my plane." He had bought his way out of
Spain for a promise of 50 gallons of gasoline -and five English Pound
notes ! Sustaining head injuries in the crash, he is not permitted to fly
high altitude missions.

down by FW-190. This was one of the first II./J.G. 2 combats when flying
from Kairouan airfield. Lt. Bühligen claimed three P-38s. The rest
of II./J.G. 2 claimed seven P-38s destroyed. The 14th FG lost three P-38s,
along with two more damaged. Martin Gleeson notes that the 82nd FG lost
four P-38s. Although the times of the 82nd FG’s missions are not known,
they were all to the Kairouan area, and II./J.G. 2 was the only German
fighter unit in the region, so we can assume that on one or more of these
missions the 82nd FG met II./J.G. 2. |

lost but showed up in the late afternoon. He was shot up (his ship) and
crash landed in a dry lake about 30 minutes from here. Sure was glad to
see Zubarik back. We ran into a helva lot of flak all of a sudden.
McDaniel was gone. I thought he was gone for good but he returned home.

The
82nd achieved a 'famous first' today - first US fighters over Sardinia.
Escorting B-17 fortresses along with B-25 and
B-26 mediums, heavy anti-aircraft fire was
encountered
over the target. Four B-26s from the nearby base were lost due to flak.
Our Group lost three P-38s, one of these from our
97th Squadron, called 'Cheeta'.
One
enemy bomber was shot down. A fifth B-26 bomber, returning from this
mission, crashed against the mountainside
after coming out of clouds at low altitude. The plane
burned, threw huge black billows of smoke up from the wreckage. All crew
were reported lost. |

Due
to very heavy rains and muddy ground conditions the first part of week, we
had no missions until yesterday. Today, five of our P-38s were shot up on
a
mission, one of these failed to return. Escorting B-26 bombers, they were
attacked by flights of Me109s. Lt. "Ace" White, last of the 38s
to return from
the
mission, added another 109 to his score. Our other Lt. White (H.G.) also
shot down a 109 which was laast seen streaming into the ground with engine
trailing smoke. Our new Commanding Officer of the 97th, Captian Wittliff,
shot down one 109. Group victories now stand at 61. This includes 45 enemy
fighters, eleven bombers and five others. We have suffered losses of 24
pilots,
25 P-38s. Lt. "Ace" White had four victories and needed one more
to become an "Ace". Yesterday he was called on the carpet for
taking off unassigned, as he put it: "To get my last ship to get the
title." Most of the
men
have been supplementing their desire for food by buying eggs, nuts, and
dried dates from the Arab natives who wander across our perimeter. Ten
eggs cost about 30 francs (60 cents), a dozen English walnuts costs 20
francs, and maybe three dozen dried dates will run another 20 francs. But
half the dates are wormy. |

The bombers hit their targets. On the 15th, Lt. McAnulty of our 97th

B-17s Fortresses, B-26 Marauders and B-25 Mitchells, with escort of P40s,

We
of 97th Squadron lost Atteberry and McDaniels. 97th Squadron escorted 70 B-26 bombers against enemy shipping and
very heavy opposition was encountered
from 109s. As a result, Lt. Atteberry, Lt. McDaniels, and Lt.McAnulty were
reported lost in combat. However, Lt. McAnulty came back safely
last night, and was flown in by an English Beaufighter. It is difficult to
realize so many of our ex-Sgt. pilots and
friends are gone. Atteberry needed only
one more victory, unofficially. During the mission, one of the B-26s was brought down by a suicide 109 who flew
directly into the middle of the
bomber
formation. Our squadron scored one victory in the air battle to bring Group total to 87. 95th Squadron planes got

March 1943, We have
again established camp. The majority are still living out of foxholes
under shelter-halves, but
there are some pyramidal also. Our squadron pilots
are to go on a 30 day relief, back to Casablanca. Eleven new pilots and
P-38s came into the squadron
today which, added to our remaining 97th
pilots
to stay here, makes 15. Of 97th Squadron, Commanding Officer (now Major)
Witliff, Captain Peterson, ex-Sgts. (now Lieutenants) Henley, Larson,
Morgan,
Rounds, Taback, Visscher, Walker, 'Ace' White, and G. White, will be
at Casablanca. 'Ace' White,
who crash landed several days ago after a mission
and at first believed lost, is O.K. and goes to Casablanca. He
reported
turning upside down on crash landing, when his left engine cut out.
Unable to get out of the
cockpit with his canopy jammed against the ground,
shot
his way out of the side cockpit window with his .45 automatic. |

In an effort to re-supply the Afrika Korps trapped in Tunis, the
Luftwaffe tried to fly in supplies from Sicily and Southern Italy. 65 JU 52s
were sent across the Med in one of the first large scale re-supply missions.
The Junkers were escorted by only 2 Bf 109s from II./JG 27 and 3 Bf 110s
from III./ZG 26. These were attacked near Cap Bon by 46 P-38s from the US
1st and 82d FG, divided into 2 formations. The Germans scrambled whatever
they could to aid the hard pressed formation of transports but the whole
reinforcement amounted to nothing more than 8 Bf 109s from II./JG 53. The
German fighter pilots shot down 6 P-38s, but of course were so outnumbered
that they were unable to cover the Ju 52s against the masses of Lightnings.
No less than 14 Ju 52s were shot down. Elsewhere, P-38s accounted for
another 15 German fighters. Combined efforts of NAAF fighters and bombers
destroyed up to 200 Luftwaffe aircraft on 5 April, with many destroyed on
the ground. |

21 Chieti Italy 42-14.
Claude
R. Kinsey Jr., 86, a ''flying sergeant" who became one of the
earliest US aces of World War II and who escaped a prisoner-of-war camp by
walking 100 miles through Italy across German lines, died Feb. 4 of cancer
in Springfield, Va.
Kinsey,
who entered the Army Air Forces as an enlisted man, trained to fly while
still a buck private, and eventually attained the rank of lieutenant
colonel, was credited with shooting down seven enemy planes over North
Africa between Jan. 29 and April 5, 1943, when he was shot down by his
own inexperienced wing man.
He
bailed out of his burning P-38 Lightning fighter, landing in 3 feet of
water near Tunis, Algeria, blinded from swollen eyes and temporarily
paralyzed below the waist. He was captured by residents who turned him
over to the Italian military.
The
23-year-old second lieutenant, after recovering from severe burns, ended
up in a large POW camp near Chieti, Italy, where he stayed until the end
of September 1943, when the Italian guards fled and were replaced
by Germans. The Germans moved the prisoners to a camp near Sulmona, Italy,
where, on the first night, the young pilot slipped out, evaded machine gun
fire and began his 30-day start-and-stop escape down the Apennine
Mountains toward Bari, near Campobasso, according to a 40-page excerpt of
his unpublished biography |

The Luftwaffe again tried to re-supply the Afrika Korps in Tunisia and
sent a formation of 35 transports on an aerial convoy from Sicily. Bounced
by B-25s and P-38s out on a shipping sweep over the Sicilian strait, both
bomber and twin-engined fighters tore into the German formations. Within
minutes, 25 German planes including 21 Ju 52 transports were shot down. In
an unusual victory, Uffz. Gaisberger of III./TG 3 claimed one P-38 destroyed
during the battle. Uffz. Herbert Romeikat of 2./JG 27 was listed as missing
after landing on the sea near Derna with engine damage. |

Italian
Macchis from 1° Stormo CT and American Lightning most likely of 82nd FG
itself, a combat that has always interested myself but whose details are
not very clear to me. This combat took place on the morning of 5 May 1943
when a group of seven Siai Marchetti SM 82 (of 149° Gruppo T) took off at
8.45 (Italian hour) from the airstrip of Gerbini (Sicily) directed towards
Tunisia under escort of 16 Macchis of 1° Stormo led by the ace Tenente
Amedeo Guidi. the Italian planes were intercepted 20 miles from Zembra by
some P38s .The Siais coded 602-5 (Tenente Camerini), 608-3 (Maresciallo
Barba) went down in flames with no survivors. The 603-3 (Maresciallo
Mascetti) exploded while ditching near Zembra island (the pilot and 5
passengers survived), the 608-2 8 (Tenente Rosci) ditched near Tunis (crew
rescued), the 607-3 (Tenente Setti) force-landed in a Tunisian beach and
finally the last two machines turned back. Some of the machines -at least
the three that exploded- carried fuel, while Tenente Fulvio Setti was
finally able to repair his kite and flew back to Italy gaining the gold
medal for bravery for this mission (it is the highest Italian military
award and very seldom was given to living people). |
