B-25s followed with an attcak on the same target. Fighters of the
Northwest African Tactical Air Force flew recon over the battle area as
the units of the US II Corps prepared to attack east from the Gafsa area.
In the Mediterranean, B-17s with fighter escort, hit shipping off northern
Tunisia.
....After II./JG 2 had 150 kills for a loss of
18 aircraft, the unit began to withdraw from the North African theatre and

relates. The 79th was supporting New Zealanders on their sweep around
the Mareth Line, strafing at 50 ft. above ground level, ground fire heavy.
We hit trucks, light tanks, guns; everything in our path got a burst of 50
caliber. The 85th lost two pilots. During
the next 16 days the 79th flew 415 sorties, pounding Rommel’s strong
position along Wadi Akarit. On one mission we were attacked in force by
Messerschmitt 109s and lost three pilots. On May 18, 1943 the 85th
squadron flew top cover for the 86th and 87th squadrons on bombing runs.
Our flight was jumped by several ME109s. We had to pull up sharply into
the attack. I got hit with a 30 caliber in the left side of the cockpit
and part of my canopy. A 20mm round went into my left wing. I spun out
around 12,000 feet and got control at about 5,000 feet. I had to fly level
with maximum trip. No one was around. I started a gradual climb across
Cape Bon. The ack-ack had a field day. I took several hits but got out
over the sea to get back to the field. My crew chief said, ‘Cap,
you’re lucky to be here. There’s a hole in the underside of your left
wing you can put your head and shoulder in.’ I’d been tempted to bail
out several times. My flight leader never got back that time.

The
P-40 was dear to Randy’s heart – it was the plane he went into
combat with in 1943. While assigned to the 86th Squadron of the 79th
Fighter Group flying out of North Africa and Italy, the young First
Lieutenant flew 84 combat missions totaling more than 127 hours, destroyed
one 200-ft. merchant ship, one motorcycle, two Me109s, one locomotive, two
railway guns, over 50 motor vehicles, two ammunition and supply dumps, two
warehouses and three factories. He would go on to fly the famous P-47
Thunderbolt, the P-51 Mustang and America’s first jet fighters -- the
P-80, T-33, F-84 and F-100. Among the other aircraft he flew were B-25 and
B-26 bombers; C-45, C-46, C-47, C-54, C-97, C-124 and C-130 transports;
and even flew in a British MarkVI Beau Fighter during his tour in North
Africa. Counting all the types and models he flew, the list goes to 97
different aircraft.

FOLEY,
Ala. (AP) - Lt. Col. Paul Graham McArthur, a combat fighter pilot who
retrieved a downed U-2 spy pilot from the Soviet Union during the Cold
War, died Friday after his lung collapsed. He was 82.
Another
pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was shot down by the Soviet Union while flying
a reconnaissance plane in the Ural Mountains in 1960. Powers was convicted
of espionage and held for almost two years.
In
1962, American and Soviet leaders agreed to trade Powers for Col. Rudolph
Abel, a Soviet spy held by the United States, and McArthur was sent to
bring Powers home.
McArthur
joined the Army Air Corps in 1940. He served as a fighter pilot with the
79th Fighter Group in North Africa and Italy during World War II.
He
received the Air Ace award after he shot down five enemy planes in June
and August of 1943, according to Air Force records. McArthur also received
the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal
with multiple Oak Leaf clusters.
McArthur
later served in the Korean conflict.
After
he retired from the service in 1966, McArthur attended Jones School of Law
in Montgomery, passed the bar and practiced law one year

The 99th was scheduled to provide air support for the September
9 invasion of Salerno on the Italian peninsula. After the German counter-attack
forced an Allied retreat, members of the 99th flew into Paestum, an airfield
near Salerno, to provide air cover for the beachhead. In early October, the
99th started flying with the 79th Fighter Group based at Foggia, commanded by
Col. Earl Bates, who fully involved the men of the 99th in combat missions. As
the Germans retreated northward, the fliers of the 79th and 99th flew
fighter-bomber missions on railroad, bridges, and communication centers to
hamper their mobility. These were grinding, demanding missions; pilots often
flew more than 5 sorties a day. This activity continued through January, 1944,
culminating in a large multi-Group strike on Naples' Apodichino Airdrome. But
so far, the 99th only had the one aerial victory to their credit, while the
79th has destroyed or damaged almost 20 German aircraft. |

Called
to World War II. Serving initially with the 16th Service Squadron in North
Africa, he joined the 79th Fighter Group in Naples in 1944. Col. John F.
Martin '40 was the 79th commanding officer, and their service together is
the only instance known to Ruff where two Hampden-Sydney
men were in the same unit in World War II. By the end of the war Ruff
had seen action in North Africa, Italy, Corsica, and France.

January 27, 1944, the Negro pilots broke out in a big way,
downing f German planes in a morning mission led by Capt. Clarence

the enemy. And the next day, the 99th continued its combat success. On
February 5, Lt. Driver got another. On the 7th, they got three more; they
also received an official commendation from General Hap Arnold at this
time.

The P-40L
Ser.No.42-10857, belonged to 86th FS, 79th FG. Coded "X49"
and bearing the nickname "Skipper" on port side (maybe
"Irvine" faintly readable on starboard), it was the personal
mount of Lt. Edward E. Parsons (whose name can be clearly seen on the
fuselage too). It wasn't flown by him however, on January 31, 1944. On
board was 2/Lt. Michael Mauritz who, during an armed recce mission
over Anzio beachhead, apparently suffered engine trouble (no signs of
enemy bullets has been found on the plane). The engine seized and the
pilot was compelled to effect a perfect ditching very near to the
shore-line, most probably right on the waters-edge. Last time he was seen
he was on the shore near Latina, Italy and was trying to hide in a bush with German troops
heading towards him. He was listed as Missing in Action (presumably
Prisoner of War).Location,
Pin Point G-068111, Point Of Departure, Capodichino L.G., Italy. Few days
after, Mauritz was sent to a POW camp in Laterina, near Arezzo (Tuscany.)
He managed to escape and after five months was able to return to his
squadron. He survived the war, went back to his native town, Turtle Creek,
OK, built a family and enjoyed five decades of peace.

At the same time, Clarence Jamison and George McCrumby were tangling
with six FW-190s when the latter pilot’s P-40L was struck by anti-aircraft
fire. ‘Something hit underneath my ship’, McCrumby told Carter. ‘Then
another burst cracked the side of my cockpit, plunging the aeroplane into
a dive at 4000 ft. I tried to pull out but had no control. The elevators
had been knocked out. I had no alternative but to jump’. I reached for the
rip cord six times before finding it, but my parachute opened immediately,
landing me safely
in a cow pasture.’ |

The P-40s quickly
turned into the German aircraft, and Elwood Driver made a diving left turn
and pulled up
about 300 yards behind an FW-190. He began firing ‘and continued to fire
in long bursts, even though my target was pulling away’,
he reported. ‘My
tracers straddled the cockpit and a sheet of flames burst from the right
side. I last saw the aeroplane burning and headed towards Rome at a height
of just 50 ft above the ground’. |

the Warhawk in a field near the frontline and was rescued by US Army

Claims 1 victory, FW-190,
Forty-eight hours
later, two more FW-190s were downed, with Leonard Jackson and Clinton
Mills each receiving credit for a kill. But the Germans had learned from
their experiences with the nimble P-40LS, opting now to rely on their
superior speed in order to avoid engagements. Several of the patrols in
February encountered German fighters,
but these simply
pulled away from Warhawks in the subsequent tail chase that ensued. |

Luftwaffe bombed
Capodichino for 30 minutes on the night of 14 March. The next day, Mt
Vesuvius erupted, spewing ash and rock that inflicted more damage on the
Allied air forces
in Italy than the
Luftwaffe could have ever hoped to have done. Luckily, the 99th FS was
little
affected by either
event. |

USAAF P-47 (79th Fighter Group) was
shot down by a British artillery unit near Anzio, Italy. The Thunderbolt
was hit by a 25-pounder shell that tore off a wing. Lt. George Bolte
bailed out safely, though he had trouble dislodging himself from the
cockpit and his parachute blossomed at a height of just 200 feet. British
ground troops calmed his nerves with some spiked tea. See p.147, Don
Woerpel, A Hostile Sky: The Mediterranean Airwar of the 79th Fighter
Group.

On 19 March the
squadron was tasked with
knocking out the
‘Anzio Express’ rail gun that
was causing
problems by shelling the beaches and
airfields. Eight
P-40s were sent out to find tunnel
openings in which
the gun might be hidden, and
after dropping
four bombs on a suspect tunnel, pilots
also strafed the
target. One P-40 was damaged by
flak, but the ‘Express’ was
permanently silenced. |

This
is the rescued Pilot’s own narrative of an engagement between a 20,000
ton German Aircraft Carrier and twelve B-47’s.
The Carriers’ guns apparently hit the engine of one Thunderbolt
Fighter Bomber which caught on fire, forcing the pilot to bail out six
miles outside Genoa Harbor, and was later rescued by a Catalina flying
boat crew of the 1st Emergency Rescue Squadron.
After many successful attacks, and dives, the battle was over.
The big aircraft carrier was left turning, and later reported as
having been sunk – this adding another score for our side.
I, Lieutenant Tom Hawk, Fighter Pilot of the 79th
Fighter Group, 87th Fighter Squadron, together with eleven
other P-47’s was ordered on a bombing mission at Genoa Harbor, Italy –
358 degrees or forty five minutes flying time from our base.
We went into a right echelon preparing to bomb.
The leader shouted: “Tally Ho” and we peeled off.
One by one we dove onto the target – a 700 foot German Aircraft
Carrier. As I pulled off the
target giving my ship everything it had.
I noticed smoke coming out of the left side of my cockpit by my
fuel cook. I smelled the
rubber burning and I couldn’t figure out what was amiss.
I called to my element leader and questioned him to find out if my
ship was burning. He replied
that my transmission was bad and to repeat my message.
I became furious and cursed over the radio.
I tried to fly near him, but as I was approaching the ship turned
into a flaming inferno and I’m not kidding when I say “A flaming
inferno!” I quickly unfastened my safety belt, but I couldn’t bail out
the first time because I was tangled up in my harness and radio wires.
At my second attempt I made it out of the airplane.
From here on I didn’t remember anything until I found myself
floating down peacefully in my chute.
As I neared the water, I tried to remember all the bailing out
procedures they had taught us in the days before.
I jumped out of my chute about ten feet above the water.
When I hit water, I started to look in the direction of my chute to
see where it was drifting. I
swam with hardly any progress to the spot where my chute lay in the water.
As I was swimming I was saying a prayer, over and over again,
hoping the chute wouldn’t sink with the dinghy in it.
I reached the dinghy and opened my “Mae West” to keep me afloat
while trying to open the stubborn dinghy.
By this time my hands were so sore, I could hardly turn the Co2
cylinder soon enough. After I
inflated the dinghy I climbed in and took a good look at myself.
I was a pretty sad looking character.
My hands and legs were pretty badly burned and it didn’t seem
like they could be of much use to me.
I started up and discovered I was only six miles from Genoa Harbor,
when we bombed the aircraft carrier.
At this, I paddled for all I was worth with my sore hands to try to
make my dinghy turn from the harbor I noticed a line which I used for my
direction. However, I managed
to float away from it as I neared the Harbor.
I sat in the dinghy – half crying – half laughing – talking
to myself and saying my prayers. After I endured the cold from the sea and the incessant
burning for two hours and thirty minutes, along came a PBY with four ship
escort of two P-39’s and two RAF ”Spitfires”.
They didn’t see me at first, but never-the-less, I continued to
wave my arms until it felt like they almost came off.
They
finally landed and taxied along beside me.
I was never so glad to see anything in my life.
They treated my burns and gave me water and orange juice to quench
my thirst.
The next time I hit land, I was in Aspretto Base, Ajaccio, and here I was
transferred to a waiting ambulance and motored to the 40th
Station Hospital, where I am now resting and being treated for my wounds.
I sincerely believed that the Air Sea Rescue Service saved more lives of
“ditching” aircraft than any other in this war of today.
