Due to the navigational difficulties of the day, they found themselves repeatedly intercepting straying aircraft from both Allied and German forces. For instance, on the 8th of November they intercepted C-47s dropping paratroops on Morocco. On other occasions they intercepted Spitfire Vs from Gibraltar, and Dewoitine D.520s operated by the Vichy French out of Algeria.

Pederson, Harold L O-885297 4FS 52FG 12AF KIA  As heavy fighting continued along the Tunisian front, the 4 FS and 5 FS of the 52 FG were moved to Thelepte airfield in Tunisia on 3 February to relieve the 33rd Fighter Group (33 FG). The 33 FG was a P-40 unit that had been nearly decimated by the Luftwaffe. The day after relief arrived, the 52 FG encountered FW-190s while escorting P-39s. This resulted in the loss of Lieutenant Harold L. Pederson. A second Spit was shot up so bad that the-wounded pilot, Lieutenant Hugh L. Williamson, had to bail out  . On February 4th, 12 Spitfires of the 4th FS escorting ground-strafing P-39s were hit by Kurt Buhligen and Erich Rudorffer of II/JG2, the two experten taking down 3 of the Spitfires for no losses.  Claim was made 16:19 hours by Erich Rudorffer, Stab II./JG 2, 5 km SW Ousseltia: 1500 m / Spitfire of 52 FG, USAAF

The Allied formation came from Thelepte airfield and consisted of 6 Spitfires from the US 4th FS / 52nd FG and 6 Spitfires from the US 5th FS / 52nd FG, escorting 5 P-39s. The Fw 190s were south of Ousseltia when air combat with the escorting Spitfires began. During the engagement, Oblt. Buhligen claimed 3 Spitfires destroyed, Oblt. Rudorffer claimed 2 Spitfires and Ofw. Goltzsch claimed one Spitfire. Either Oblt. Buhligen or Oblt. Rudorffer shot down Capt. Hugh Williamson, who baled out with a wounded leg. While he descended in his parachute, Lt. Harold Pederson flew protective circles around him but a II./JG 2 pilot latched onto his tail after circling 1 1/2 times and was shot down in flames. The 52nd FG lost at least one other Spitfire during this combat. Capt. Williamson claimed one German fighter probably destroyed and 2 damaged, but not one II./JG 2 machine was hit by enemy fire.

We were patrolling all daylight hours - you talk about a waste of time and flying hours, this was it! But Vinson, his squadron was to replace another squadron, and at the appointed time, the squadron that was to leave the patrol didn't see the replacements, which was Vinson and his squadron. So because of fuel, they left at the appointed time, but Vinson wasn't there. Well, what Vinson had done was delay his takeoff  5 minutes intentionally, and maintained low-level flight across there to El Guettar, and lo, and behold, he caught 13 Stukas doing their business! They shot down, to the best of my knowledge, 12 of those Stukas and lost one Spitfire. Now, unfortunately, that one lone Spitfire was Arnold Vinson. During April 1943, Captains Norman MacDonald and Arthur Vinson of the 52nd FG became the first USAAF Spitfire aces, though Vinson was lost immediately after shooting down his 7th victory.

. 23 May 43 . . Fawcett, John . 2FS 52FG 12AF . On 23 May, we found them at La Sebala, a dusty stubble hayfield beside the Bizerte road about 10-krn north of Tunis. There we lived in Limey tents in an olive grove beside the field. Upon arrival, Mike Encinias, Jack Schneider, Bruce Kellam and I were assigned to the 2nd Squadron. This was it! I was in a combat outfit and ready to give 'em hell! The field had just been vacated by a Luftwaffe fighter squadron two weeks earlier and there were several German aircraft lying about, which gave me my first glimpse of the Fw-190, Ju-52, Stuka dive bomber and others. The next day Sgt. Pilot Confer, a quiet mustachioed veteran of the Tunisian Campaign, checked me out in the Mk. V, and Capt. Louie Zendegui led us on our first combat practice mission down around Medjez El Bab and Kairouan where we got our initial indoctrination in the loose, six-ship box, weaving RAF combat formation. In the next two months we spent many hours in this manner up over the Tunisian plains sharpening our combat tactics. Our group had been transferred into the Coastal Command, so we spent the summer patrolling merchant convoys, covering minesweepers, scrambling after high-flying enemy reconnaissance aircraft, searching for downed air crews far out over the water, and gunnery practice.

Claims 1 victory, 1 FW 190 Destroyed 20 miles NE of Cape Bon. While on patrol 20 miles NE of Cape Bon at 18,000 feet going West at 17:15 hours with Lt. Brown, we sighted 14 FW 190’s at 13,000 feet just West of us going toward Sicily. They were flying three 4 ship, line abreast elements with two ships lagging on the right. As we passed over them we attacked from above and behind in a dive out of the sun, the two ships on the extreme right. The ship I attacked evidently never saw me as he took no evasive action. I opened fire at directly astern at 200 yards and closed to 100 yards, noting cannon and m/g strikes on the fuselage and behind the cockpit. The e/a pulled up slightly, staggered and went into a tight spiralling dive emitting heavy black smoke. We broke right and made a climb almost to the stalling point above the other e/a. I could only follow his dive for about 2000 feet and saw the e/a in a tight spiral and smoking badly. The left element started to break towards us and then dove to the NE for Sicily, when they spotted us above them. The rest of the formation dove for the deck out of formation and never broke towards us. I believe I must have killed the pilot as the e/a looked absolutely out of control when I last saw it before leaving for base. I claim one FW 190 destroyed.

Then our squadron lost a pilot on 19 July when George Bailey was killed as his plane hit the water while practicing shadow gunnery in the Gulf of Tunis. Shadow gunnery was good practice in deflection shooting, but it was a dangerous form of training due to the difficulty in judging your height off the water. A memorial service for George was held under the olive trees a couple of mornings later, but it left me troubled and determined not to attend any more such gatherings.
. On or about 30 July 43 . Spitfire Schneider, Jack O-664265 2FS 52FG 12AF . The airdrome at Palermo, Sicily, was secured by Patton's Army the first week in August and orders came for us to move. Unfortunately, at that time we had more pilots than airplanes, so four of our pilots including myself had to go with the ground echelon riding a Navy LST all the way. We were to depart from La Goulette Harbor. At the last minute before boarding we were joined by a late arrival. Jack Schneider, while flying to Sicily, had an engine failure and parachuted into the sea. He was picked out of the drink by a Royal Air Force Walrus amphibian and brought back in time to join us on our boat ride.

12AF Transferred In September, my best friend, Dave MacMillan, and I were transferred as pilot replacements to 309th Squadron of 31st Fighter Group which had just moved into the Salerno beachhead. After getting over the pain of leaving all our friends in 2nd Squadron we were greatly pleased with this move and the chance to get out of the Coastal Command. The 31st FG was part of Twelfth Air Support Command and engaged in bomber escort and close tactical support of the ground forces and thus always located right up close to the lines. We joined them at Montecorvino Airdrome within the beachhead perimeter which had been secured a week or so earlier. Mac and I soon realized that here too was a great collection of characters, all Americans, some of whom had come to us from the RAF when they found they could fly Spitfires under their own flag.

On Jan. 24, 1944, Hoover's twenty-second birthday, he lost his roommate and best friend. After being shot down near the coast of Calvi, Corsica, Tom Watts had successfully bailed out of his Spitfire. But high winds dragged his parachute into a reef of rocks offshore, and he drowned. It wasn't the first fatality for his band of men, but it hit Hoover the hardest.

Houston, Commanding Officer of the 4th FS, flew an ill-fated recce mission to France.  As the formation approached the German airfield at Grande Bastide,  Cornwell's flight observed Me 109s taking off, and he and Lt. Harold Beedle  dove to attack them.  On their first pass they used their combined firepower to shoot down one of the Me 109s, but failed until too late to see Messerschmitts closing in on their tails.  Cornwell and Beedle had left two Spitfires up high as top cover, and then dove to attack six Me 109s which were taking off.  However, the attacking German fighters struck so quickly the top cover could not react.  The Me 109s hit both Spitfires with fatal bursts and both of them were seen to hit the side of a nearby mountain and explode.  As this took place three other Me 109s bounced the two Spitfires flown by Lts Kater and Lt John Carlton Burchfield and Kater's Spitfire was shot down and crashed in the water south of Grand Bastide. Burchfield returned home safely."

. Mar 44 . Details of the month . . . 52FG 12AF . The 52 FG flew mostly B-25 and B-26 escort in March, plus some dive-bombing missions against factories, bridges, aircraft plants, and harbor- installations. After dropping their bombs, they would often strafe locomotives and any other targets of opportunity they could find. March was not a good month statistically. The group lost six Spits, claiming only one Ju-88 destroyed, one FW-190 damaged, and one Ju-88 damaged
. 3 Mar 44 . . Adams, James A Jr O-438003 2FS 52FG 12AF B/o After escorting B-26s to Rome, he lost his engine at 5000ft on his way back to base. He bailed out and landed in water 20 miles southwest of Marinello. His Mae West inflated only on one side and when he tried to inflate his dingy it exploded. Lt Chuck Fuller, orbiting Adams, saw what happened and seperated his own dingy, and threw it down to Adams who was unable to retrieve it. After an hour and a half in the water Adams was picked up by an air-sea Walrus and returned to Borgo. This bailout was from a Spitfire.

. . . . . . . 52FG 15AF . "'I witnessed this [Mustang wing] loss on two occasions. One wing was lost directly over the airfield at Madna, Italy in the fall of 1944. The airplane and pilot went straight into the ground not far from the control tower. One other loss occurred there during an afternoon 'rat race.' Coincidentally we were discussing this wing loss with Johnny Typer, the civilian representative from NAA at the time. He was adamant that no-one could pull the wings off a P-51. No sooner had he made that remark than I heard behind me the dull thumps of two wings separating. He asked 'What's that?' and I answered that it had happened again. He asked how I knew, to which I replied, 'Once you've heard that sound, you'll never forget it.' We watched as the litter and tumbling wings fell slowly to the ground, long after the fuselage and pilot had crashed - an unforgettable sight and feeling." - Lt. William G. Coloney, 52nd FG,  quoted in Mike Spick, Great Aircraft of WWII

. 6 Nov 44 . . Information . 4FS 52FG 15AF . From the "Dumb But Lucky" book, by Richard Curtis, November 6th, 1944, Gassman almost bought it. I was flying wing to Deckman on this my, twenty-fourth mission, escorting B-24s over Moosbierbaum, Austria, oil refineries north of Vienna Suddenly ME-109s bounced the bombers from out of the sun. returning fire, one of the bombers missed the Jerries, but hit two of our boys from the 4th, Gassman and Farnkopf, the bullets piercing Farns radio just inches behind his head. Two others from the 4th, Carson and Dean, found their formation on the return flight so tight that their wings collided. Fortunately the damage was minor, and landed safely.

" Suddenly I spotted a plane stall out about 15 feet above the runway and drop like a rock, bounce, then--it's engine catching- head straight for us in the tower. Crowded in with me were some dozen others. There was no way, even one of us could have descended the twenty five steps to the ground in time. On the radio I was bleating, go around again, go around again. Inside was Sobszak, a pilot from the 4th. Seeing he was going to hit us, he dug his left wing into the runway, turned two cartwheels, dug the nose into the ground, and flipped over on his back, just 20 ft short of the tower, there to disappear in his canopy under the mud. Sob emerged with nothing more than a minor cut above the eye.  This happened Feb. 8th 1945. Also this was his second accident within a week.   The other mention was flying wing man for the author on March 23, 45.
