On
12 November the USS West Point left Rio for the long haul to India,
arriving at Bombay on 2 December. The Squadron's equipment was unloaded,
and the men were put on a train and sent to British Army rest camp at
Deolali, India. They spent several days there stretching their "sea
legs" in preparation for the next phase of the trip. The cleanliness
and luxury of Deolali was a welcome respite from the crowded conditions
common to troopships. On 13 December the 316th boarded HMS Denera, and
three days later the men disembarked in Eygpt. By 23 December the Squadron
was at Landing Ground 91, Amyria, Eygpt, and a period of training under
combat-wise supervisors followed.

Middle East Theatre,
Stalag 7A Moosburg Bavaria 48-12 (Work Camps 3324-46 Krumbachstrasse
48011, Work Camp 3368 Munich 48-11) The
first 314th combat exposure was on March 13, 1943, while on attachment
with 57FG. It was to be a three squadron fighter sweep over Gabes. The
314th pilots flying were Maj. Bob Worley, Squadron Commander, Capt. Jimmie
Phillips, "A" Flight Leader, Capt. John Simpson, "B"
Flight Leader and Capt. Les Krause, "C" Flight Leader. Krause
describes the mission. "I'll never forget my first combat mission. We
all had the Hollywood concept of how a war was fought. Jimmy Phillips and
I were assigned to the 57th Group Commander's (Col. Art Salisbury) Flight.
Jimmy was to fly on Salisbury' wing (#2 position) and I was to fly on the
Element Leader's wing (#4 position). My Element Leader aborted so I then
was flying on Salisbury's wing opposite Jimmie. We crossed the bomb line
and was approaching Gabes. Suddenly the flak started coming up, black
puffs all around us. Any pilot who says he is not tense under these
conditions, or even scared, is not telling the truth. Both Jimmy and I
closed in to fly close formation on Salisbury. We figured if we were close
to him we would be safer since he knew what best to do. Almost instantly
he looked at both of us and shouted over the radio, "Get the hell
away from me! I'm trying to get out of it too!" Then we got bounced
by a bunch of Me-109's. I think I only saw three or four of them. During
the debriefing I found out there were 30+. I about dropped a load in my
pants. Where were the others I didn't see! I don't remember what the 57th
losses were but Bob Worley was shot down and bellied in but he made it
back. However, Capt. Simpson was shot up, bellied in and was captured by
the Germans. The morale of everyone, pilots and ground crews, hit a low.
All our airplanes are supposed to come back. We learned quickly that
Hollywood hadn't fought a war."

The
316th was assigned to help the British advance, but it was not until
15 March that its pilots were deemed ready for combat. The day before the
Squadron went into action it was transferred to Causeway Landing Ground,
Tunisia, and attached to the 79th Group, and they flew several missions
under their careful tutelage before being allowed to operate as an
independent organization.

The
316th received its baptism of fire while supporting the offensive. The
Squadron's P-40's roared over an intersection near El Hamma, leaving six
enemy vehicles burning on the road. Despite heavy ack-ack all aircraft
returned safely with the exception of Major Frederick G. Delany's (the
Squadron Commander). Because of leg wounds, he was forced to land at an
English field near the front; and unfortunately, he never returned to the
Squadron.

attachment to 57FG. Palm
Sunday, The mission
was scrambled at 1650 (4:40 PM) and the RAF Spitfire squadron rendezvoused
with the P-40's over Sousse and took their position at the top of the
formation. Dense flak was experienced after crossing the bomb line and
continued until the formation was over the Bay of Tunis. At approximately
1745 (5:45 PM) the mission was on station and patrolling the area from
Cape Bon to Tunis. An estimated formation of 100 Ju-52's was sighted with
an estimated escort of 50 German fighters. Accounts vary as to the
composition of the fighter force. One account says the force was composed
of Me-109's, Me-110's and Macci 202's. However, Me-110's had never been
seen in the theater and while Macci-202's were in the theater all the
fighters shot down were Me-109's. The battle started and one might say
attacking the slow performing Ju-52's was a "turkey shoot". Even
though the 64th and the Spitfires kept many of the enemy fighters engaged
several did break through to the battle taking place with the Ju-52's.
There was bedlam and the Ju-52 formation turned east towards land and many
crash landed on the Cape Bon beaches. The P-40's and Spitfires returned to
their bases at approximately 1900 (7:00 PM). Total claimed victories were
58 Ju52's and 16 Me-109's destroyed. This includes 314th claims of 23
Ju-52's and 2 Me-109's.

1 victory. On
8 May the Squadron bagged its first kill in aerial combat. A flight
was returning from a dive-bombing mission over the rapidly shrinking enemy
bridge-head in Africa when the pilots saw three Me-109's dive from out of
the sun on the Flight Leader, Captain Robert C. Dempsey. The Germans had
the bad luck not to spot the rest of the flight, and when they turned to
get Captain Dempsey they were pounced on by fourteen fighters. Two of the
enemy planes turned tail and escaped, but one went down in flames. |

On
May 9,
1943 a two squadron mission were scheduled, a squadron from the 57th
Fighter Group and the 314th with the 314th leading. The last flight of the
57th squadron was late getting in to takeoff position on the other runway.
A pilot in the last element was taxiing too fast. To avoid colliding with
the plane in front of him he slammed on his brakes and nosed his aircraft
up at the intersection of the two runways. Due to all the dust the control
tower couldn't see this dangerous condition and gave the green light for
takeoff to the lead element of the 314th. Somehow the lead element cleared
the nosed up P-40 but didn't break radio silence to report the nosed up
P-40. When the second element saw that the lead element was airborne they
started their takeoff. The element leader cleared the P-40 on the left but
his wing man hit it dead on and both aircraft burst into flames. The pilot
of the nosed up P-40 had long since abandoned his airplane. A Life
Magazine reporter and photographer were present and the July 5, 1943 Life
Magazine has a picture of the funeral on the cover and as a header for the
story, America's Combat Dead. A tragic and unnecessary loss. A LIFE
magazine crew happened to be covering events the day of the accident. Lt.
Woodbury’s funeral made the cover of the July 5, 1943 issue. Pallbearers
were enlisted men, led by lst Sergeant Ashbock, right front |

The 99th joined the 324th Fighter
Group in El Haouria on June 29, 1943. At first they flew escort missions
over the Sicilian coast. Within a few days, Lt Charles B. Hall got the 99th
on the scoreboard when he downed an Fw-190. Sadly, this triumphant occasion
was marred by the death of Lieutenants White and McCullin, victims of an
operational accident. Escort missions over Sicily continued through the
summer of 1943. One Tuskegee Airman, Lt. George Richard Bolling, was forced
to bail out and floated in the Mediterranean for a full day before he was
recovered. On July 19, the 99th moved over to Licata, on the coast. |

The 2nd July: the 99th escorts B-25s bound for a German airfield at Castel
Veltrano in Sicily. After bombs away, German fighters attack from above,
accounting for the loss of two 99th P-40s and the first Tuskegee Airmen to
be killed in action: Sherman White and James McCullen.
During this time Charlie ‘Seabuster’ Hall claimed the squadrons first kill,
an FW190, while fellow pilot
’Ghost’ Lawson claimed one probable and one damaged. There were no allied
bombers reported
lost. It’s interesting to note that while ‘mixing it up’ with 190s and
109s, an unlucky 99th pilot named Dryden was attacked by a Macchi 202, an
Italian fighter. While German fighters had the advantage over the 99th’s
P-40s in every way but one: the Warhawks were able to out turn them, the
Macchi 202, a rare fighter to encounter, was be able to match them. Although
Dryden’s ship was damaged,
by the Macchi, he was luckily saved when squadron mate Jim Knighten saw the
Italian fighter off. |

1.50 victory, On
9 July, when it was providing top cover for a group of A-20's, the
formation was jumped by over fifty ME-109's. In a flash the sky was filled
with dog fights. The 316th bore the brunt of the attack when its planes
attempted to draw the enemy away from the bombers. The pilots put into
play the P-40's two greatest assets, fire power and maneuverability, and
dueled with the Germans for over ten minutes. The sky was filled with
exploding planes, floating parachutes, fluttering shreds of wings and
tails, streaks of oily smoke, and the criss-cross of tracers. The enemy
could not stand such determined defence and turned for home. The trim
P-40's streaked or limped, according to combat results, back to Tunisia,
and the 316th found that it had destroyed eight German planes during the
action. |

Pilot
killed due to structural failure, El Haouaria , Tunisia
Following
a thorough inspection of the wreckage and interrogation of the many
witnesses to the accident, the cause of the accident is explained as
follows:
Lt. Ellis was flying his P40F between 1000' - 1500'. Evidence indicates
that the right wing, in breaking off at the center section, folded back
over the fuselage tearing off the cockpit canopy frame and all, the upper
portion of the fuselage, and a portion of the tail surfaces.
The wreckage was strewn for some half a mile in the following order:
(1) Pieces of the right wing,
(2) right hand horizontal stabilizer,
(3) canopy glass and frame,
(4) guns and landing gear out of right wing, (5) fuselage, engine and left
wing.
Due
to the nature of the accident there was no opportunity for the pilot to
attempt a jump.
The
cause of the accident being material failure of the right wing structure. |

James
P. Dealy, 316FS, 324FG, Roccasccca, Maenza, Italy, he
evaded and returned to his Unit, , Now, at
last, to my forty third mission! This took place in the late morning of
Saturday the 13th of May, 1944 ( I've been wary of May the 13th now for
over four decades! ) and just two days after the powerful offensive thrust
against the Axis forces in northern Italy. Intelligence called for an air
strike against a train loaded with enemy troops en route to relieve their
garrison at Monte Cassino. The train had left Rome and was on its way to
Frasinone. Most of the pilots in all three squadrons of the 324th were
already on sorties or were otherwise out of the camp area at Pignataro (we
had recently moved there from Cercola to be closer to the front). I was
resting in my tent after flying twenty nine missions in the preceding
twenty eight days, when they dug me out of my sack for that ill fated
scramble....four pilots from out of the 315th and four of us from the
316th. Major Sanders led the eight ship sortie and his element leader was
Lt. Schiewe. One wing man was Lt. Kusch. Lt. King led our flight and I was
his element leader. Lt. Mathew O'Brien (his second or third sortie) was on
King's wing and another new recruit flew on my wing. Another minus
for me was that my own P40, number 79, "The Lovely Lois", was
out for a routine maintenance check; therefore they borrowed Lt. Sven
Jernstrom's number 93 Warhawk for me to fly. Each pilot left his
parachute in the bucket seat all the time. Since "Jerky" was
about six inches taller and fifty pounds heavier than I, you can imagine
how his 'chute fit me!
We searched all the way up the
Liri Valley railroad tracks to the suburbs of Rome and then Major Sanders
led us back for another look. At some point over the high mountains
approximately 45 miles northeast of Anzio, we were jumped by about twenty
of the crack "Ace of Spades" ME109 Luftwaffe fighter pilots.
They probably scored several hundreds of conquests over Allied planes
(they counted four for a four engine bomber), and they would add more
victories to their score before this engagement was over! There were also
two or three dozen FW190s armed with bombs under the MEs, but I do not
recall seeing any of those planes in the dog fight. Sanders pulled into a
Luftberry left and ordered "Bombs away!" Before the circle was
completed, Lt. Kusch was hit and (I was informed later) went in with
plane and bomb. After the second circling and upon resuming to the
Luftberry from shooting nearly head on at the 109s (I noted they attacked
in pairs), I saw Lt. O'Brien just ahead of me level off to the right
and leap out of his plane. I honestly believe that "Obey"
made a speed record for hitting the silk, and we were flying about 250
mph! On the third orbit of the Luftberry, I saw "Obey" floating
down in his white 'chute just below us remaining six 324th pilots and a
striped parachute about 2,000 feet above our level (one less Kraut pilot
who nailed him?). No time to keep count though I knew King was right in
front of me now. I don't know how many orbits we made, perhaps five or
six, that's about how many times l levelled off to spray some 50 cal.
rounds at them. On that last one, I had levelled off to get a good burst at
a yo yo ing Jerry pilot (and I thought I was being successful) at the same
time that our leader called "Tally ho!" and made a split S down
toward a distant bank of clouds between mountain ridges. I was too intent
on getting a second victory, so I wound up being "Tail end
Charlie" and quite a distance rearward. Although I could yet see the
others in single file, with several pursuing MEs, I could not count them
and assumed my wingman was behind me. I nearly red lined the throttle and
was in a more vertical flight than the others to try and catch up. Soon,
barely above the huge rock boulders in that valley, I was gaining very
well on the others. Shortly before the leader reached the cloud cover, the
second or third American pilot behind him suddenly pulled left and up the
mountain slope and so fiercely fired at a 109 that he must have seriously
damaged it. Then, another ME flew in on our pilot's tail immediately in
front of me. I whipped my plane left and up into that enemy's tail and
with my "catch up" speed I was firing almost point blank. I was
still firing when old number 93 was very well clobbered. In these last
four sentences we're talking fractions of seconds in elapsed time. Despite
being stunned, my reflexes saved further damage through pulling right and
up into that welcomed thin cloud cover.

crash, Lake Bolseno , Italy, plane condemned on Jul 15,
1944. Carl Molesworth's
book on P-40 MTO aces says Taylor took it over after it was shot-up when
flown by Hershel Green (325th FG, serial given as 42-10436, ); in May it
wouldn't have had the tail checks (added July) but had serial in yellow on
the tail. Standard dark earth-middle stone-azure blue finish probably with
red spinner , white "13". Early bar-less insignia and radio mast
( it was a long-fuselage "L" ). No known nose-art but
Taylor named it "Duchess of Durham IV ".. Later in 1943 210436
flew with the 324FG as " 11 " and checks painted out. Still with
the name but several "touch-ups" .

Patteson, Donald D |

He was a replacement pilot in the 316th. He arrived in Nov
44 and stayed through the end of the war, flying 83 combat missions and
earning the DFC and 11 air medals.
That must have
been just after he arrived, because, his first combat mission wasn’t until
Dec 44 and then he flew 83 missions between then and April 45. He was
assigned to the 316th and arrived at the same time as Jack
Peeples (316th) and Ken “Stumpy” Dahlstrom (314th
and later one of Watson’s Whizzers in Operation Lusty). They were all
instructors come in with close to 2000 hours, I think in October. He
usually flew squadron number and name, 98, Janie |
