Bob Ruegg (later Lt General) was one of 25 members of the 27th Bomb Group who were evacuated from the Philippines along with seven pilots of the 24th Pursuit Group on board flying boat A18-10 "Centaurus" of 11 Squadron RAAF. The aircraft was piloted by Squadron Leader Norm Fader and co-piloted by Squadron Leader Mike Seymour. They had departed Darwin on 23 December 1941 in RAAF short Empire flying boat which travelled to Brisbane via Groote Eylant, Townsville, Rockhampton, arriving at the Hamilton Reach of the Brisbane River on 24 December 1941. |

The A24 aircraft selected for transport to the Philippines had just completed War Game manoeuvres at Savannah AAB, GA. USA and were not cleaned or serviced prior to disassembly. (All were ex stateside 3rdBG shipped planes)
Control cables and various items were not secured, sealed or locked down. This caused a fair amount of damage, both to these cables, instruments and various components by way of chaffing, corrosion, chinking and breakage. A high percentage of the engines were in need of overhaul. Materially deficient would be a fair description on their arrival. |

By January 4 1942, twenty of the 52 A-24s had been assembled and test flown. Of these 14 A24s were the earmarked aircraft for the forming of the first squadron
This first A-24 squadron, the 91st BS (Lt) commanded by Capt Harry L. Galushia, was transferred to Archerfield, Brisbane for immediate combat training with its higher ratio of trained A-24 pilots. The new pilots were given their transition flying on the A-24, which included formation-flying, night flying and dive-bombing. The latter was performed north of Southport (Gold Coast) on an island with RAAF practice bombs |

Forgot to lower his undercarriage and performed a wheels up landing. After the aircraft stopped, the powder charge of one practice bomb detonated and the crew hastily evacuated the aircraft, thinking that it was on fire, as did the standby fire crew. Only slight damage was incurred. He had previously had a prior experience of landing with only one main wheel down and locked in the same aircraft |

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA. Took off at 1:00pm from Bataan Field. Stone was the wingman of flight leader, Ben Brown, to escort at 17,000' a Stinson biplane piloted by Jesus Villamor taking photographs over the Ternate area. Two other P-40s flew higher top cover.
Spotted by a Ki-46 Dinah, six Ki-27 Nate fighters intercepted, dog fighting with the escorting P-40s. Lt. Stone pursued a single Ki-27 Nate piloted by Kurosawa.
On the ground at Mariveles, a Japanese fighter had been observed chasing a P-40 overhead, gaining on it. The two went in and out of clouds around Mount Mariveles, then an explosion was heard. Both the Nate and Lt. Stone failed to return. Stone remains MIA to this day. |

Also in Mar. Col. Davies got word of 25 B-25s in Melbourne belonging to the Dutch. He took a group of pilots with him and came back with those 25 B-25s. (He begged, borrowed or stole them - take your pick) Half were assigned to the 13th Sq. and half to the 90th Sq. April 1, 1942 the 8th Sq. sent some of their A-24 on a mission to Lae, which was socked in so they dropped 5 500lb bombs on the strip at Salamoa. April 5 (Easter Sunday) the 13th and 90th flew their first mission to Gasmata on the Is. of New Britain. |

Nine A-24's of the 3rd BG took off from 7-Mile Drome near Port Moresby to bomb Lae. The A-24's were escorted by six P-40Es of RAAF 75 Squadron. The A-24s were led by 1st Lt. Robert G. Ruegg as C.O. Floyd "Buck" Rogers was out with dengue. This A-24 was last seen diving on an anti-aircraft position. While no one apparently saw him being shot down it seems almost certain that he was brought down by the standing air patrol of A6M2 Zeros. |

Realizing the futility of continued resistance, Maj. Gen. Edward King, commander of forces on Bataan after MacArthur was ordered to leave, surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942 (the island of Corregidor held out until May 6). Although General King surrendered his force to save them from unnecessary suffering, the brutality of their Japanese captors killed thousands of the POWs in what became known as the Bataan Death March. |

The convoy is attacked by two American wolf packs. The submarines’ attacks scatter the convoy. Each Maru is attacked repeatedly, from both sides. During the wolfpacks’ attacks on the convoy, LtCdr George H. Brown’s SNOOK (SS-279) sinks the ARISAN MARU. Sadly, she is carrying 1,781 American PoWs who are lost along with 204 members of the ships’ crew and 125 other Japanese passengers. Only nine PoWs survive |

POW/Survives sinking |
The Shinyo Maru was torpedoed by the USS submarine Paddle. A few of the men managed to swim-float-drift, etc., and made it to shore some 2 l/2 miles from the ship. Out of the 700 or so men aboard, only about 82 survived and have been accounted for. Bert Schwarz was one of those men. They finally were picked up by submarine and safely delivered to Australia. The Shinyo a 2,518 ton cargo ship was sunk by the USS Paddle under the command of B. H. Nowell on Sept. 7, 1944 at location 8-11N, 122-40E. |

Badly Damaged , returned to Base. The Bostons used for the first 2 missions were in RAF 226 Sqdn. markings with their " MQ " codes. AL452 was retained by Eighth AF when the squadron moved to N. Africa. Originally they were re-designated as the 1st. Pursuit Sqdn. (night fighter), to be equipped with Douglas Havocs (Turbinlite) which had 2,700 million candle-power searchlights in the nose for illuminating German night bombers; they would then be shot down by night fighter Hurricanes.
This was not very successful so they reverted to the 15th BS (L); they moved to Molesworth on June 9th but flew their first mission in British Bostons from the RAF station at Swanton Morley in Norfolk. ( July 4th.). This was to 2 Luftwaffe airfields in Holland. The photo ( from IMPACT Magazine for April 1943) was taken over Bergen-Alkmaar airfield, no. "2" is the number 2 plane in the flight, just below it is the explosion of the no. 3 plane shot down by Flak on the edge of the field.
They flew one more mission in RAF Bostons before getting their own which were re-marked with US stars; they flew 3 more in these before standing down in Oct. for transfer to Twelfth AF. in Nov. At the time they were stationed at Podington.
The low-level raids on Holland were a foretaste of what to expect from German airfield defences later. |

AL397 was a Boston III (DB-7B) formerly with the 15th BS in 1942 when it flew a mission; the photo shows it in it's original RAF camouflage.
It was later stripped to bare metal and assigned to HQ 1st Bomb Wing and had red-black check cowlings. It was coded "G" in black on the nose.
The 15th flew their last mission with the Eighth on Oct.2 1942 and were assigned to Twelfth AF. Later the plane is listed with 398th BG. 15 October 1942 it was transferred to Twelfth Air Force for support of Allied landings in North Africa, being assigned to Ste-Barbe-du-Tlelat, Algeria on 26 December 1942, Its crews were absorbed by the 47th Bombardment Group (Light), and the 15th was inactivated. |

Hometown: Mecklenburg County, NC. An A-20A Havoc, #40-3154, of the 89th Bomb Squadron, 3rd Bomb Group, crashed into Moreton Bay, near Brisbane on 5 July 1942. 1st Lieutenant Richard "Dick" Birnn was on a test flight in the A-20A Havoc, when it cart wheeled into the waters of Moreton Bay. Dick Birnn was killed in this tragic accident. The 89th Squadron was the first to be equipped with the A-20's which had been shipped from the United States in crates. They were then assembled in Brisbane and test flown before being flown to Charters Towers.
The following is an extract from the 90th Combat Log which would seem to suggest he was with the 90th Squadron rather than the 89th Squadron:- On July 5th Lt. Richard R. Birnn in Brisbane on official relief from combat zone, was testing an A-20a and from unknown causes crashed to his death. He had flown some 14 combat missions, been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Silver Star and had flown 140 combat hours without injury to his crew. His loss was deeply felt by the squadron and the group |

The 89th Sq. went begging until eventually they started getting some A-20s On July 31, '42 the 8th sent their last remaining A-24s (I think 7) to attack a convoy around Buna on the north coast of N.G. They lost their fighter cover over the Owen Stanleys, went in any way - one plane survived. Eventually they received some A-20s, then some B-25s. The 13th and 90th used B-25s - altho they had been converted to low-level straffer - until Dec. '43. At that time the Group finally received a full compliment of A-20s for all four Sqs. In Aug. '42 Hqs. Sq. had been deactivated as a tactical unit and was strictly a Hq. Sq. |

The Salerno invasion was viewed with something less than awe by many of the pilots, the prevailing view being that it was
a poorly conceived and executed affair. An incident which took place on the evening of September 13 was considered by
some of them to be an example of the botched nature of the operation.
The 97th Sq. 82FG, was flying its final patrol mission of the day, first in the "Pears" area, then over "Peaches." (All three of the
group's patrol areas were named after fruits: "Pears" was over Pisciotta, "Peaches" over Agropoli and "Apples" over
Salerno itself.). Around 7 o'clock, the controller informed the P- 38 pilots of the presence of some "bogies" (unidentified aircraft) - possibly "bandits" (enemy aircraft) - on the deck, and he provided them with the map grids. They dove from 11,000 feet down to less than 3,000 feet and opened fire on the four "bandits." The squadron leader,
Capt. Smith, immediately stopped, however, and ordered the others to do the same. The "bandits" were actually a flight of American A-36s (dive-bomber version of the Allison-engined P-51A Mustang). FIO Verle Tilley had already hit one squarely, however, and it burst into flames. Fortunately, its pilot managed to bailout and was rescued by American soldiers. The A-36s, which were attacking German positions, had been misidentified by the controller as Me 109s supposedly strafing American troops! Location, 2 Mi. N E Sassano, Point Of Departure, S. Antonio. April _ May 1944, One of our pilots learned the hard lesson of why you bail out of a P-40 (or other single engine, piston powered airplane) on the right side. The prop corkscrews the air behind it in a way that if you bail out to the left, it supports you so the tail can hit you. If you bail out on the right it throws you down out of the way. I am not sure of the name, maybe it will come to me later but I think his first name was Jesse. (I finally remembered, Jesse Harris.) He was hit while strafing a truck and had to get out of his plane right NOW! Unfortunately he went out the left side and his back was broken by hitting the tail. The first thing he knew, he was lying on the ground surrounded by angry Germans. He was put in a hospital. When the Germans retreated he was left behind with a skeleton staff as he could not be moved. He made it and probably lived a good life afterward. |

Location, 3 Mi W Of Isola Di Liri, Point Of Departure, Gaudo, Italy. Statement of 2nd Lt. Truman Forbis: On the morning of 11 November 1943, at approx. 0820 hours, while flying on Lt. Price, Albert S. Jr's wing on a ground strafing mission, I noticed coolant or white smoke pouring from the right side of his engine. We were in the vicinity of Isola di Liri, Italy and he had apparently been hit by small arms fire. He peeled up into the sun and I momentarily lost sight of him. When I next sighted him he had gained about 4000 feet and his engine was still pouring white smoke. He bailed out and I saw his parachute open. The plane crashed into the mountain.
Engine V-1710-87 serial 42-176063 (He returned during May 44 (My grandfather saved him in the mountains in Italy), see Charlie Dills story of the 27 th FBG , My research about this pilot ended when I found the grave in the Golden gate Cemetery of San FRANCISCO, He died in a fatal spin in Texas with a T6D plane 42-86476 on 26 August 1948. Sincerely, Argentino Rea) |

Crash landed at Anzio. The Major got a 20 mm(?) shell in his engine. The engine didn't stop but there was oil all over the place. He couldn't see because there was oil on his goggles. I went up on his wing and talked to him to keep him straight and level while he cleaned off the oil so he could see. He jettisoned the canopy and we headed for the Anzio beachead and the emergency strip. He went in and belly landed. He landed long and if he had not touched down there he probably would have cleared the edge of a gully and hit the other side head on.! |

If you will email me your postal address I will send you the only documentation I have on Lt Joyce. There is no Missing Air Crew Report as the crash was considered an accident. Actually there were two accidents a few days apart, both accident reports say that he survived but from the squadron history and the translated article we know he was killed in the 2nd accident that occurred on the 15 of July 1944.

Coded D, take off Serragia in Corsica at 4:30 p.m. , with twelve other planes of the squadron. Eleven other planes of the 523Sqdn and twelve of the 524Sqdn take part in an attack of the stations of Istres and of Miramas.
The weather is good, but the visibility is limited by a light fog on the objective. Flak of all calibres breaks out against the allied planes. At 6:20 p.m. , the P 47 Thunderbolt of the 522 Squadron locate their objective: the marshalling yard of Miramas. 24 bombs of 1000 pounds hit the station. They are surprised by three Messerschmitt 109 and one Folke-Wulf 190. During the combat three enemy planes are cut down, and fourth is damaged. His plane is seen for the last time at 7:15 p.m., one and half miles west of Eguilles.
Witnesses saw the plane flying over Pourrières and, that its pilot bailed out, but the parachute fails.. The pilot is crashed onto the ground near Pourrières, and the plane is falls on the field at Pinchinat located on the commune. Norbert HERRIGES is transported to the vault of the old people's home of Pourrières, then buried under the war memorial of the locality. Lieutenant HERRIGES would have been killed by Oberfelwebel Eduard ISKEN of Jagdgruppe 200 which asserts to have shot down a P 47 Thunderbolt, around 6: 30 p.m., in the north of the mountain of Holy Victoire, thus obtaining his 40 victory.
His body was given to the American Authorities September 3, 1944 in order to be buried with the American Cemetery of Luynes, then with that of Draguignan 2 the Mars 1948. Later on, its body is transferred to the United States in order to be buried with the cemetery of Whitefish,, January 20, 1949. MACR 8092.
August 19, 2004, on the 60th Birthday of the liberation of Pourrières organized by the Municipality, on the initiative of Rhone-native Association for the Air Memory (ARSA), a commemorative plate in memory of Lieutenant Norbert HERRIGES is inaugurated on the War memorial. |

He said the women would come up from a village at sunset with whatever food and armament they had managed to acquire. One of the men came over to him, meaning to honor the American pilot, and said to him, "Zis woman, she will stay with you zis night!" He was red as a beet when he told us and would not elaborate further! This was his sixth mission and my 94th.
Since he had been in contact with the Maquis he was sent home rather than take a chance that he might go down later, be captured and be forced to betray them.
As a matter of fact we went back to the US on the same boat, several weeks later. Between us we averaged fifty missions! Charles Dills with 94 and Alfred Nelson with 6. |

Hometown: Hudson County, NJ. Entered the Service from: New Jersey, Buried at: Plot C Row 2 Grave 11, Rhone American Cemetery, Draguignan, France, Awards: Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. One of our pilots, Harry Murphy, went to town with the Pratt and Whitney representative. They apparently had a good bit to drink and on the way back to the base they were going too fast and he missed a turn. They all went flying through the air and the big Harley-Davidson motorcycle landed on top of Harry and killed him. He had about 66 missions at the time. |

Hack, James E, two b-26 where shot down before the p-47 was able to react, but one of the enemy A/C was also shot down. This was a great result, because the B-26 has been jumped by four me-262! The b-26 survivors stated that three Me-262 jumped their planes: Iguess that at least one of the four me-262 stated in the Lt. Hack MACR was shot down or was in fight before attacking the bombers. A last note: That messerschmitt is believed to be flown by one of the major German aces, Ghunter Lutzow. |
