forced to belly it in upon landing. The second P-38, which he also flew
in, blew a tire on landing. By December, several more P-38s arrived (more
successfully) from other West Coast Units. Pilots continued to fly in
whatever aircraft were available, primarily P-38s, P-40s, and P-66s.March Field, CA, It wasn't until mid-October that the first P-38 was
received by Lt. Peterson, who had to belly it in upon landing. The second
P-38 he got blew a tire during landing from gunnery practice. Peterson
must have thought either himself or the P-38 jinxed. (not known if this
was the first or second one, thought to be the 2nd one). Landing accident due to mechanical failure,

the left engine. Returned to Llanbedr for a single engine landing but when
about two miles from the runway at 800 feet the right engine also cut out
due to pilot not switching over from the reserve tank. Pilot turned
towards the beach, undershooting and landing in about two feet of water.
RTD, c/n 222-5804, condemned combat 11/11/42. Prior to the accident,
the airplane participated in fighter sweeps over the Dutch and Belgian
coasts, making it the only surviving 8th Air Force combat veteran
P-38 and probably the oldest surviving 8th Air Force combat veteran of any
type.
Nov-42
The 14th FG suffered very heavy loses during this period. Between
November 1942 and 28 January 1943 the group lost 32 pilots (out of an
original complement of 54) and had been reduced to only seven operational
aircraft. During its first period of service in North Africa, the 14th FG
claimed 62 victories. Even though North Africa had been given the highest
possible priority for new P-38s, there simply weren’t enough aircraft
being produced in late 1942 to sustain such heavy loses. On 28 January the
14th FG was withdrawn, and replaced by the 82nd Fighter Group, also
equipped with the P-38.

49th FS, took off to attack an armored column that had been reported by
intelligence. Upon arriving in the report area no targets were found, so
the two diverted to Kasserine Pass. This pass was the main route into
Tunis from the southwest so it was heavily fortified by the Germans.
Arthur Cole described the strafing run into the pass like "walking
down a bowling alley lane while every bowler in the house tried to throw a
strike at you." Lt. Elliott’s plane was hit, and though heavily
damaged, managed to continue to fly. It soon became evident that they were
not going to make it back to base before dark. This was a critical issue
for two reasons: the lack of night time navigational aids in the region,
and lack of runway lighting at their base. Lt. Cole suggested that they

Lt. Cole suggested that they
try to land on a dry lake and then both could fly out in his plane in the
morning. Lt. Cole landed first, but his landing gear collapsed due to the
rough surface. He radioed Lt. Elliott to land gear up, which he did
safely. Both men were unhurt, but both airplanes were substantially

Lt. Ervin C. Ethell of the 48th Fighter Squadron, 14th Fighter Group,
in North Africa, flew the P-38F during the winter of 1942. The most
striking item for this P-38 is the nose art, consisting of 5781 then a
dancing girl and the name Tangerine. This was his original *Tangerine* and
was shot down while being flown by another pilot. I was flying Tangerine
II (I had lent my first Tangerine to a pilot who didn't return), and the

Entered the Service from, North Carolina, Tablets of the Missing at
North Africa American Cemetery, Carthage, Tunisia, Awards, Air Medal,
Purple Heart, pronounced dead on 5 Dec 1943, Sidi Nsir, Tunisia, MIA,
Enemy Aircraft., On December 5 at 12:20 in the afternoon, six P-38
fighters from the 49th FS took off to escort nine A-20 bombers on a
mission to bomb Bizerte Airdrome. The six P-38 pilots were Capt. Harold E.
Lewis, Lt. Charles L. Earnhart, O-431401, Lt. John P. Stief, Lt. Robert F. Elliott,
Lt. Robert N. Carlton, O-431117, and Lt. Russell F. Gustke. During the last 10
miles to the target, the flight encountered intense flak, but it was on
the flight out of the target that the Lightnings were attacked by 10 or 15
Luftwaffe Me 109 fighters. The attack occurred approximately 10 miles west
of Bizerte Airdrome. The six P-38 fighters turned into the attack. Lt.
Carlton and Lt. Gustke each claimed an Me 109, while Lt. Earnhart claimed
two probables (unconfirmed downed Me 109s) and two damaged Me 109s. The
attack also took its toll on the six P-38s. Lt. Carlton was the only pilot
of the six to return home unscathed. Lt. Earnhart crash-landed near Souk
el Arba and returned to base uninjured. Lt. Gustke crash-landed in the
desert and survived the landing. When he saw a group of Arabs approaching
his airplane, he opened his parachute to release the silk as a
distraction. While the Arabs fought over the silk, he escaped
unnoticed. He made his way to a nearby residence and the friendly
occupants helped him return to base. Capt. Lewis, Lt. Stief, and Lt.
Elliott all failed to return. Capt. Lewis was later confirmed killed in
action by the Commanding Officer of Battery B 175th Field Artillery
Battalion. Lt. Stief was also later confirmed killed in action by British
Ambulance with the Royal Army Medical Corps. To this day, Lt. Elliott is
still missing. No trace of his body or his airplane has ever been found.
It is possible that his airplane went down in one of the lakes near
Bizerte.

This afternoon nine of our ships went back again and really got worked

to belly land it. One of the 15th Squadron gunners got shot up pretty
badly. Seems the flak wasn't too bad but some Messerschmitts jumped them
while the P-38s were engaged elsewhere. From the stories they sure had a

When
his plane caught fire after being shot down by Germans, Clark Smith
prepared to do something he and his fellow pilots had only talked about:
bail out.
“I
was so excited that I forgot to release the canopy,” Smith, a World War
II P-38 pilot, told 11th-grade history students at Rancho Buena Vista High
School.
He
bailed out and landed near a remote village near Gabes, Tunisia, with a
broken ankle and shrapnel in his arm.
A
pair of friendly villagers brought him a donkey to ride bareback to their
village. But just as they reached it and lit a fire to keep warm, he was
captured by Italian troops and spent 19 months in a German prison camp,
Stalag Luft III.
“When
people ask me what's the most beautiful sight I can think of, it's the
sight of Sherman tanks crashing through barbed wire,” said Smith, who
flew 28 combat missions in Tunisia

February 28th
1943, the 48th Squadron moved out of the combat area and returned to
Mediouna airdrome,
French Morocco some eighteen miles southeast of Casablanca. There
followed a period of rest, recuperation, and training. The 48FS had
suffered such severe and regular losses that the pilots and some personnel
where sent back to the United States. Remaining planes went to the 82FG
and the 14FG was slowly rebuilt back into a 3 Squadron unit..Pilots were
received from the nearby training school at Beerschid and from
the 78th Fighter Group in England,
and the unit was brought up to full strength. By the end of April 1943,
preparations began for movement into the combat area. The ground echelon
left in several motor convoys for Telergma, the next base of operations;
and the air echelon departed on May 5th. By May, when the 48th
returned to combat service at Telergma, Algeria, the war in Tunisia was
over. On May 7th, the British captured Tunis and the Americans
seized Bizerte.

While
searching for targets in the desert one day, he said he discovered four
German JU-88 bombers coming straight at him. The aircraft were bombing
Faid Pass in the mountains south of Tunis, Tunisia. He fired at the group
of bombers, destroying one and catching the attention of the German ME-110
fighters escorting the bombers. One of the ME-110s hit his plane, forcing
him to crash land in the desert. "An Army company saw me go down and
dispatched a motorcycle to pick me up. But before the Army arrived, a
large group of Arabs that seemed to come from out of nowhere assembled
around my plane," said Mr. Knapp. "Encountering the Arabs was
very interesting because they filled my canteen with water and gave me
food."
He said meeting the Arabs was quite an experience, and he couldn't help
but feel that "the Good Lord was looking out for me."
Another close call came when one of his aircraft engines was hit during a
dogfight over Tunis. He was apprehensive about trying to fly the P-38 back
to his home base in Tunisia, but the aircraft took the loss of one of its
two engines in stride and got him home safely.

with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, On a strafing mission to Foggia satellite A/D #8
he was last seen in target area. After occupation by allied troops it was
rumored that a twin engine plane was seen to be shot down by E/A. Upon
investigation with the civilian authorities in the different towns in the
vicinity the crashed plane was finally located. Although the numbers found
in the wreckage did not correspond to the numbers on Lt. Hester’s plane
it was found that the wreckage had been strafed by Germans. At the time
the body had been buried as an "Unknown English Aviator". Later
the body was removed to the British Military Cemetery at Bari. However
clerks remembered seeing a metal tag which was from the body and they
remembered the name "William" and "Texas" having been
on the tags. The clerks stated the tags were like our own tags. The
effects were turned over to a Red Cross agency but no receipt was found.
Later it was definitely established that the plane number AF 43-2534 was
the plane piloted by Lt. Hester on this date. His home was Dallas, Texas.
It has been recommended that the British Military authorities be informed
as to the findings and his grave appropriately marked.

January 1944, one engine in Raley's P-38 was hit by enemy fire. Flames
were shooting 25 feet behind the engine and Raley wanted to head to the
coast to ditch the plane. But enemy fire started hitting the remaining
operating engine and a 20 mm shell landed in the cockpit floorboard. The
shell didn't explode, but it went through the plane's fuel tank.. Bailing
out and captured, he was then shipped by rail box car to Munich, where he
spent two months in Stalag 7-A. He spent some time there in solitary

Hometown, Rusk
County, WI, August 19, 1944, eight P
38 Lightning of the 14th Fighter Group take off at 0700 hours from Aghione
in Corsica for a reconnaissance mission aiming for a zone west of the
Rhone. After having approached the coasts of Provence in good weather, the
planes begin their mission attacking at low altitude on the motor
transport convoys around Aix in Provence, Saint Cannat and Cavaillon.
The P 38 Lightning encounter an intense anti-aircraft. Six of the planes
suffer more or less important damage. The plane controlled by Lieutenant
Darrell Keith STOYKE is hit by a battery of Flak, around 0830 hours,
whereas it flies over the locality of Eyguières (Mouths of the Rhone).
The plane crashes on the ground in the south of the locality, and the
pilot dies in the ensuing fire. Around 17oo hours., the German authorities
require of the Mayor of Eyguières to carry out the burial of the pilot in
the local cemetery. His body was transferred to the cemetery from Luynes
before its repatriation in the United States in November 1948. The 2nd.
Lieutenant Darrell Keith STOYKE, ASN 0-763396 belonged to the 37th Fighter
Squadron of the 14th Fighter Group. He had been born on June 29, 1922 in
Minneapolis. It is with the assistance and the generous contest of the
Municipality of Eyguières that Messrs Claude FAURE and POGUET finalize
their objective to commemorate the memory of Lieutenant STOYKE. May 8,
2004, on the War memorial of this locality, is inaugurated a commemorative
plate in the honor of this valorous American pilot.
