This Bf
109G-2/Trop is Black 6 wk.no.10639 in service
with 8 /JG 77 flown in support of Rommell's Afrika Korps by
Lieutenant Heinz Ludeman in 1942, it was was captured in 1943 at
Gambut air Base, Lybia, by the personnel of RAAF 3 Squadron. Restored to fly in 1991 by Ron
Snaddon and his team it flew from
Duxford for five years. German squadron records and pilot's diaries
show that this 109G was damaged in a dog-fight by Flight Sergeant W D
Brown, a Canadian of 112 Squadron near
Gambut,Cyrenaica
(now Libya), "Western Desert" Brown 4
November 1942, (Ref Shark Squadron Pilot, Bert Horden, page 52-53), the
pilot Lieutenant Heinz Ludemann, who although wounded managed to land
in the desert. He got back to his Squadron but the plane was captured
by the advancing 8th Army. There where two Browns in 112 squadron at
this time this one was called for obvious reasons "Western
Desert" Brown. LT Heintz Ludemann was shoot down and killed
by 112 Squadron pilot Ray "Goose" Guess,
RCAF J10277, on
10 March 1942.
Ludemann
was flying 'Black 6' during the incident that led to its capture,
however it was not his machine, but that of Eduard Isken. This
according to a statement made by Isken in an interview in Jaegerblatt
shortly before his death. BTW, the unit should be reported as 8./JG
77.

On March 19, 1945, « Pritzl » Bâr claimed his
first aerial victory in the Me 262, a P51 - his 206th victory. Since
January 1945, Bâr was commander of III./EJG 2, whose goal was to
train new Me 262 pilots for the jet fighter unit JG 7. That task
however became more and more difficult, due to Allied attacks and lack
of resources. In the third week of March, 1945, Bâr's unit could only
muster eleven Me 262s, and Ill./EJG 2 was transformed into a regular
fighter unit.
Major heinz Bär's Messerschmitt 262, March 19, 1945 |
On March 21, Bär
shot down a B-24, his 207th aerial victory, and on March 24,
another B-24 and a P-51 were downed as Nos. 208-209. Until April
23rd, when Bär was transferred to JV 44, he had downed 13 enemy
aircraft in the Me 262.
|
In April, Bär brought the prototype of the
new Me 262 A-la/Ul with him to JV 44. This aircraft was armed with two
MK 103s, two MG 151/20s, and two MK 108s. Flying this plane, Bär
claimed his last three victories during the war: two P-47s on April 27
and one more Thunderbolt over Bad Aibling on April 29, 1945. With his 16
victories in the Me 262, Heinz Bär is ranked as the third most
successful "jet fighter ace" in World War II.

Ju 87 D-1/Trop. of Obstlt.
Walter Siegel Geschwaderkommodore StG 3, Derna 1942
Ju 87 B-2/Trop. of 3./ StG 3 ,
Egypt 1942
Junkers Ju 87R (S2+MR) of 7./StG
77 with paint scheme used during the Balkan campaign of April 1941.
This version of the Ju 87, with long range underwing fuel tanks, was
first used operationally during the Norwegian campaign in 1940.
Ju87 Dive Bomb Technique
A. Ju87 enters dive, here at 15,000 feet.
B. Ju87 reaches the maxium dive speed of 350 mph at a
dive angle of 80%.
C. About 30 seconds after start of the dive, the Ju87
reaches the pull-out altitude, which was previously decided if
the attack was planned. The pilot presses a button initiating
the automatic pull-out system.
D. A few seconds after pull out is initiated, the bomb
automatically releases from the plane.
E. After the pull-out, the pilot attempts to regain
control of the plane, retracts the dive brakes, opens the
throttle, trims for level flight and tries to get away as
quick as possible to avoid being hit by the explosion and
debris of the bomb!
